On September 17, 2023, Macon County Ambulance District was dispatched to Loch Haven for a 46-year-old female in cardiac arrest with CPR in progress. Lea Apel at Loch Haven had immediately started CPR. Brandon Osborn, EMT, Tyler Foreman, EMT, Hope Gerdes, EMT, and Sharon Kennison, RN all arrived from Macon County Ambulance District as well as Jimmy Maloney and Nick Bloomberg 1st responders, and Macon City Fire Department. The patient Veronica Drew was transported to Samaritan Hospital where the ambulance met up with the Air Evac flight crew. Ashley Shoemaker, RN and Dr. Skiba were working in the Emergency Room. After many unsuccessful attempts to keep her heart stable enough to fly, Veronica was transported by Macon County Ambulance District to Columbia by ambulance with the flight crew and EMS staff onboard, with Jimmy Maloney driving. She was taken to the cardiac Cath lab where she was found to be having a major heart attack due to blockage. She spent many days in the ICU as well as some time at RUSK for therapy.
On Thursday December 20, 2023, she was surprised by meeting the crew who had saved her! Please note the words on her shirt. She is mentally and physically unchanged from her incident. This is a true testament of great care and immediate start of CPR. Thank you to our hometown Heroes!
